From the beginning women have processed wool from flees to hemp and spool by themselves, they spun, wove and knitted blankets and cloths for their family and their trade is as old as the world. Everything that couldn’t be sewed from linen and cloth was knitted: warm woolen socks, mittens, shawls and woolen sweaters.

Especially since the 1960s Sirogojno has been known for its traditional knitting and wool garment production. Invited by the GRAD European Centre for Culture and Debate (KC GRAD), we visited the village and its knitters as part of our six day long ‘exploring inspiration’ journey.

In a region of Zlatibor Mountain the tradition of making hand-knitted, woolen clothing has been followed for centuries. Local women, along with their daily duties, process wool, spin it, weave it and knit warm clothes and covers. Through different patterns on rugs, scarves and sweaters they paint and enrich their daily lives and pre-defined role in the patriarchal family. Ornaments on the clothes are inspired by landscapes and nature of the region where those women were born and raised.
